Tips to Help You Safely Transition to a Vegetarian Diet

Why Become a Vegetarian?

There are many reasons why you might want to become a vegetarian. Some people choose a vegetarian diet for ethical reasons, either because they don't like killing animals or because they don't like the way that food animals are treated. For others, it's an environmental issue - the amount of resources used to consume animals for food is much higher than that needed to live on a vegetarian diet. And for still others, vegetarianism is a medical choice. Whether because of allergies or illnesses, some people's bodies simply thrive on a vegetarian diet.

There are many more reasons why individuals choose to pursue a vegetarian lifestyle as well, but no matter what your reasons, becoming a vegetarian doesn't need to be a difficult or unpleasant choice. These tips will help you transition to a vegetarian diet while still getting the nutrition you need from your diet.

Getting the Nutrition that You Need

If you are not used to a vegetarian diet, you might find that you are used to getting many of the nutrients that you need from meats. Meats generally provide a large portion of the protein in our diets, as well as some important vitamins and minerals. Furthermore, plant proteins aren't broken down as easily into components that the body can use, and they don't have as many amino acids. The most common ways to include vitamins and minerals that could be missing in a vegetarian diet include:

  • Iron - found in tofu, dark molasses, dried figs, and broccoli.
  • Vitamin B12 - found in fortified soy milk and cereals.
  • Calcium - found in fortified orange juice, leafy green vegetables, and soy milk.
  • Vitamin D - found in fortified soy milk and some cereals.

The way to ensure that you receive a balanced diet as a vegetarian is to get to know the sources of these vital nutrients and to make sure that you eat enough every day. Variety in the foods you eat will also help you to achieve your nutritional goals. For example, aside from milk and eggs which many vegetarians eschew, beans, nuts, soy products, and cereals are good sources of protein as well as being natural ingredients for vegetarians.
A supplement like a good multi-vitamin can also help you to achieve a properly balanced diet.

Managing Cravings for Meat

One of the challenges that all new vegetarians have to face is a craving for some of the meat-inclusive food that they used to enjoy. Cravings are not only frustrating, but they have also discouraged many people from becoming a vegetarian. Here are some tips on how to deal with meat cravings when you first transition to a vegetarian diet.

  1. Make Sure You Are Getting Your Nutritional Requirements - Some cravings may be your body's sign that something is lacking in your diet. Make sure that you are getting all of the nutrients you need, using supplements if necessary.

  2. Make Vegetarian Versions of Your Favorite Meals - With a little bit of creativity, many of the foods that you love can be recreated, or at least approximated, with vegetarian substitutes. For example, if you miss the texture of meat in your favorite pasta sauce, try frying and crumbling in vegetarian sausage instead. Tofu, properly spiced and served with vegetables and sauce, can taste a lot like chicken. Cakes can be made without eggs or other animal products.

  3. Try Something Totally New - If you can't eat the foods you crave, you need to find new meals to love. Be experimental - try something new every week.

  4. Remember that Cravings are Temporary - Although meat cravings can be very strong, they will fade with time. Remind yourself of the good reasons for switching your diet, and hang in there - it will get easier.

  5. Don't Let Failure Set You Back - If you give in to a craving, don't give up on your goal to become a vegetarian. It is at worst a temporary setback.

Becoming a vegetarian can be a healthy and rewarding decision. By following these tips to make your transition safe and simple, you can also be on the path to living a vegetarian lifestyle.
